India has a huge mobile audience for cricket and other sports, but its legal position changed substantially in 2026. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 and final 2026 Rules prohibit offering, advertising and facilitating payments for online money games across India, including services operated abroad. This guide explains the current framework, app checks, payment risks and support options without treating site access as proof of legality.

Online betting in India: the current position
India has one of the world’s largest mobile audiences and an exceptional appetite for cricket, football and kabaddi. That demand does not make real-money online betting lawful. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 and final Online Gaming Rules, 2026 took effect on 1 May 2026.
The Act applies throughout India and to foreign-operated services offered into India. It defines an online money game broadly: a user pays, deposits or stakes value expecting monetary gain, whether the game depends on skill, chance or both. Offering these games, advertising them and facilitating related payments are prohibited. Esports and qualifying social games are separate categories, but calling a product a “skill game” does not legalise money staking.
Access is not authorisation
Offshore sites, mirror domains and Android packages may still be reachable. Browser access, a store listing, rupee support or Indian payment logos do not establish Indian approval. Authorities can block domains, direct financial institutions to stop transfers and investigate connected accounts. A foreign licence does not override Indian law or guarantee an effective local complaints route.
Do not use a VPN, alternate domain or payment agent to bypass a block. Avoid claims of guaranteed returns, fixed matches or loss recovery; these are common signs of fraud and account theft.
Payments and account safety
UPI is India’s dominant retail payment rail, alongside net banking, cards and wallets. Familiar payment methods do not validate a betting service. Check the payee before approving a collect request, never share a UPI PIN or one-time password, and never install remote-access software for “verification” or withdrawals.
- Use only your own verified account; avoid agents and rented bank accounts.
- Read withdrawal limits, identity checks, bonus wagering and dormant-account rules before depositing.
- Keep transaction references and never pay an extra “tax” or “unlock fee” to release winnings.
- For suspected cyber financial fraud, contact the bank immediately and report through 1930 or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
How to assess an app
Identify the legal entity, the regulator named on its licence and the countries that licence covers. Check ownership, privacy, age verification and dispute procedures. Very large bonuses, unclear rollover terms, crypto-only withdrawals and support conducted only through messaging apps increase risk. Independent reviews may expose repeated payment complaints, but they do not replace regulatory status.
Responsible play and support
No app, tipster or system can guarantee profit. Chasing losses, borrowing to deposit, hiding activity, missing bills or being unable to stop are warning signs. Blocking payments, uninstalling apps and asking a trusted person to help control finances can reduce immediate harm. For serious distress, contact a qualified local mental-health professional or emergency service.
