Hungary's online betting landscape has undergone significant transformation, moving from a state-controlled monopoly to a regulated, open-licensing system. Under the new regulations, private operators based in the European Economic Area (EEA) can apply for licenses to offer online sports betting services. The Hungarian Online Betting Landscape

Regulatory Context

Hungary's online betting regulations have undergone significant reform. Historically, the market was operated as a state monopoly by Szerencsejáték Zrt. Following reviews and alignment with European Union market principles, the legal framework was updated.

As of January 1, 2023, the online sports betting market was opened to private operators based in the European Economic Area (EEA). Companies meeting the criteria can now apply for a license to operate in Hungary. All gambling activities are supervised by the Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities (Szabályozott Tevékenységek Felügyeleti Hatósága - SZTFH), which is responsible for licensing, enforcement, and ensuring operators comply with national laws, including responsible gambling measures.

Market Overview

The betting market in Hungary reflects the country's sporting interests. Football is the most popular sport for betting, followed by other sports with strong local followings, such as water polo, handball, and basketball. The state-owned operator, Szerencsejáték Zrt., remains a significant presence with its Tippmixpro brand.

Since the market's liberalization in 2023, several licensed international operators have entered the market, increasing the choice of platforms available to Hungarian users. This has led to a more competitive environment in terms of odds, market variety, and technological features, with a clear trend towards mobile betting via dedicated applications.
